Quick answer
Corporate Casual is the default for many modern, flexible American workplaces, particularly tech companies and startups. It is an elevated version of Smart Casual where professionalism still comes first. The goal is to look neat, comfortable, and ready for an impromptu client meeting, without the need for a suit or tie.

Common mistakes
FEMININE
Overly revealing tops, casual sundresses, flip flops, ripped denim, or athletic wear such as hoodies and sweatpants. Avoid heavy costume jewelry, overly bold prints, and anything that looks more suited to a weekend brunch than a workplace.
MASCULINE · GENDER NEUTRAL
Flip flops, ripped or faded denim, athletic wear (hoodies, sweatpants), tee shirts with large graphics, cargo shorts, or sandals that are not clean and polished. Even in a relaxed office, the look should be neat and professional.
Fabric and colour
FEMININE
Cotton, wool blends, and fine gauge knitwear in professional colors. Bolder colors, soft prints, and flowy fabrics like silk or chiffon can add personality while keeping the look polished. Avoid anything sheer or overly casual like jersey or fleece.
MASCULINE · GENDER NEUTRAL
Cotton, wool blends, and fine gauge knitwear are the standard. Stick to professional colors such as navy, charcoal, white, and light blue, with room for subtle patterns like checks or stripes. Avoid casual textures like fleece or jersey.
Footwear and accessories
FEMININE
Smart flats, loafers, low heels, or neat ankle boots.
MASCULINE · GENDER NEUTRAL
Leather loafers, brogues, or very clean, not obviously athletic leather/suede sneakers. Socks must be worn.
Seasonal
FEMININE
In summer (Jun to Aug), cotton blouses, linen blend skirts or pants, and open toe flats keep the look comfortable and professional. A light cardigan is useful for heavily air conditioned offices. In winter (Dec to Feb), knitwear, ankle boots, and a tailored coat work well across most US climates.
MASCULINE · GENDER NEUTRAL
In summer (Jun to Aug), lighter cotton shirts, linen blend chinos, and short sleeved collared shirts are comfortable and appropriate. In winter (Dec to Feb), add knitwear over a shirt, a blazer, or a structured jacket for layering in colder cities like Chicago, Boston, or New York.
In United States
A code American tech companies wrote by accident
Corporate Casual as Americans use it did not come from an etiquette book. It came from technology and creative firms that abandoned the suit but still needed a floor, and the phrase spread outward from the West Coast, Austin and the New York startup scene into finance adjacent and professional services offices that wanted to look modern. That history explains why it varies so much by industry inside the same city. A Manhattan law firm using the phrase means something a great deal closer to Business Casual than a San Francisco product company does. The reliable American reading is a collared shirt or a knit, quality chinos or tailored trousers, and shoes that were chosen rather than defaulted to.
Sneakers, denim and the client test
Two questions dominate this code in American offices. The first is sneakers, and the honest answer is that clean minimalist leather sneakers are now acceptable in most Corporate Casual environments and still not acceptable in some. Running shoes never are. The second is denim, which sits on a genuine line. Dark, undamaged, well fitting jeans pass in a large share of American offices under this code and fail in others, and Friday is often the only day the question is settled. The useful filter is the client test. If an unannounced client walked into the office at eleven on a Tuesday, would the outfit still be fine. If yes, it belongs. If it needs an apology, it does not.
Frequently asked
What is Corporate Casual?
Corporate Casual is Business Casual adapted for modern, less traditional workplaces. It allows more personal expression while maintaining professionalism. Think chinos with a smart shirt, a blazer with dark jeans, or a structured dress with flats.
How does Corporate Casual differ from Business Casual?
Corporate Casual is slightly more relaxed. Business Casual still implies traditional workplace standards. Corporate Casual reflects tech companies and creative industries, particularly on the West Coast and in cities like Austin or New York's startup scene, where professionalism can include clean sneakers, quality knitwear, and modern silhouettes.
Can I wear sneakers to a Corporate Casual office?
Yes, clean, minimalist sneakers are widely accepted in Corporate Casual environments. Avoid athletic or heavily branded styles. Leather sneakers, slip ons, or classic canvas styles in neutral colors work best.
Can I wear a dress to a Corporate Casual workplace?
FEMININE
Absolutely. A tailored shirt dress, wrap dress, or A line dress in a professional fabric is a great Corporate Casual option. Keep the length at or below the knee and pair with smart flats or low heels. Avoid anything too tight, short, or revealing.
Do I need to wear a tie for Corporate Casual?
MASCULINE · GENDER NEUTRAL
No. A tie is not expected and would feel overdressed in most Corporate Casual workplaces. A neat collared shirt, polo, or quality knitwear is the standard. Save ties for Business Formal or client facing meetings where the dress code calls for it.
Does Corporate Casual mean the same thing in tech and in finance?
No, and the gap is wide. A San Francisco product company reads it as a knit and clean sneakers, while a New York finance adjacent firm reads it as close to Business Casual with a collared shirt and leather shoes. Match the office you are in rather than the phrase.
Are jeans acceptable under Corporate Casual in the US?
In a large share of American offices, dark and undamaged jeans with a good fit pass. In plenty of others they do not, and Friday is often where the line sits. Watch what the people two levels above you wear on a Tuesday and copy that.
What is the quickest way to judge if an outfit clears the bar?
Ask whether an unannounced client walking in at eleven on a Tuesday would change anything. If the outfit needs an explanation, it is below the code. If it does not, the details are yours to choose.
