SMART CASUAL · AUSTRALIA · FORMALITY 4 OF 10
Smart Casual
Australia's default social dress code, relaxed at the top and completely unyielding about footwear at the bottom.
Formality
Sits in the casual band of the scale.
Quick answer
Smart Casual is the phrase Australian venues and hosts use most, and the Australian reading is more relaxed than the British or American one in almost every respect except shoes. A collared shirt with good chinos and leather shoes, or a well cut dress, is sufficient at nearly any venue that asks for it, and a jacket is often unnecessary between November and March in Sydney or Queensland. Tailored shorts genuinely belong at relaxed outdoor venues in the warmer states, which is not true anywhere else on this site. What does not travel is footwear. Thongs are the single most common reason guests are refused entry at Australian restaurants and bars using this code.

Common mistakes
FEMININE
Thongs, ripped denim, athletic wear (track pants, hoodies), overly revealing or sheer tops, or tee shirts with large graphics. Even casual pieces should look intentional and well maintained.
MASCULINE · GENDER NEUTRAL
Thongs, ripped or faded denim, athletic wear (track pants, hoodies, sports jerseys), baggy or ill fitting clothes, or tee shirts with large graphics or slogans. The goal is neat and put together, not gym ready.
Fabric and colour
FEMININE
High quality cotton, linen (especially in summer), fine knits, and durable blends. All colours work well. Prints and patterns are welcome as long as the overall look stays polished. Flowy fabrics like silk or chiffon can add a feminine touch.
MASCULINE · GENDER NEUTRAL
High quality cotton, linen (especially in summer), fine wool, and durable blends. Stick to solid colours or subtle, neat patterns. Avoid overly casual textures like fleece or jersey unless they are clearly premium quality.
Footwear and accessories
FEMININE
Smart flats, low heels, stylish sandals, neat leather ankle boots, or clean leather loafers. A structured day bag or crossbody in leather or canvas. Jewellery can be more expressive here than in formal settings.
MASCULINE · GENDER NEUTRAL
Loafers, leather or suede casual shoes, or very clean non athletic sneakers. A leather belt and a simple watch complete the look. Avoid sports watches, heavy chains, or overly casual accessories.
Seasonal
FEMININE
In Australian summer (Dec to Feb), linen dresses, cotton blouses, and open toe sandals are ideal. Light layers like a cardigan or linen blazer are useful for air conditioned venues. In winter (Jun to Aug), knitwear, ankle boots, and a tailored coat work well.
MASCULINE · GENDER NEUTRAL
In Australian summer (Dec to Feb), linen or cotton shirts, chinos, and loafers are comfortable and appropriate. Tailored shorts may be acceptable depending on the venue. In winter (Jun to Aug), add knitwear, wool blazers, and leather boots for layering.
In Australia
Smart Casual in Australia
Australia is more relaxed than Britain about the top of this code and considerably stricter about the bottom of it. The top is easy. A collared shirt with well cut chinos and leather shoes, or a good dress and sandals, will get you into almost every Australian venue that asks for Smart Casual, and a jacket is usually unnecessary from November to March in Sydney, Brisbane or anywhere in Queensland. Nobody in Australia thinks less of you for not wearing a blazer in thirty degree heat. Tailored shorts occupy a genuinely different position here. At a relaxed outdoor venue in the warmer states they are acceptable at this level, and that is not true in Britain, Ireland or most of the United States. In a city dining room in Melbourne or Sydney they still are not. The bottom of the code is where Australia is inflexible, and it comes down to one item. Thongs are the single most common reason guests are refused entry at Australian restaurants, bars and clubs, and it happens on a Friday night whatever the rest of the outfit is doing. Clean leather sandals, loafers, boots or a minimal leather sneaker all pass without comment. Beyond footwear, the reliable failures are singlets, football jerseys, ripped denim and visible activewear. Melbourne runs a slightly sharper version of the code than Sydney or Brisbane, and its weather turns quickly, so a light jacket earns its place there more often.
Frequently asked
What's the difference between Smart Casual and Business Casual?
Smart Casual is social and lifestyle oriented. It suits dinners out, gallery visits, casual events, or stylish weekends. Business Casual is workplace appropriate with a professional tone. Smart Casual allows more relaxed choices like quality tee shirts, dark jeans, and clean sneakers that would not suit a Business Casual office.
Can I wear jeans for Smart Casual?
Yes. Dark, well fitted jeans without distressing, rips, or heavy fading are generally acceptable for Smart Casual. Pair them with a smart top, a blazer, and leather shoes to elevate the look. Avoid light wash, baggy, or distressed jeans.
What shoes are appropriate for Smart Casual?
Clean leather loafers, leather trainers or clean minimal sneakers, ankle boots, or smart flats all work well. Avoid formal dress shoes (too stiff for the vibe), sports trainers, thongs, or heavily worn casual shoes.
Is a blazer necessary for Smart Casual?
Not required, but a blazer is the easiest way to elevate a Smart Casual outfit. An unstructured linen or cotton blazer, a smart bomber, or a quality knit cardigan all work. Without a blazer, your other pieces need to be particularly well chosen.
Can I wear a plain tee shirt for Smart Casual?
A plain, high quality tee shirt in a neutral colour under a blazer is generally acceptable for Smart Casual. Avoid logo heavy, oversized, or graphic tees. The tee shirt should be well fitted and in excellent condition.
Can I wear a dress to a Smart Casual event?
FEMININE
Absolutely. A midi dress, wrap dress, or shirt dress in a quality fabric is a perfect Smart Casual choice. Keep the length modest and pair with smart flats, low heels, or ankle boots. Avoid anything too formal or too revealing.
Do I need to tuck in my shirt for Smart Casual?
MASCULINE · GENDER NEUTRAL
Not necessarily. A well fitted untucked shirt can look perfectly polished for Smart Casual, especially with chinos or dark jeans. If the shirt is long or boxy, a half tuck or full tuck creates a cleaner silhouette. The key is that it looks intentional.
Are tailored shorts acceptable for Smart Casual in Australia?
At a relaxed outdoor venue in Queensland or northern New South Wales, yes, provided they are tailored, sit at or near the knee, and are worn with a collared shirt and proper shoes. In a Melbourne or Sydney city dining room they still are not. This is a genuine Australian difference, because shorts do not belong to this code in Britain or Ireland at all.
Why do Australian venues refuse entry over thongs?
Because thongs are the clearest line Australian venues have between beach dressing and going out, so they use them as the test. It is the most common single reason for a refusal at restaurants, bars and clubs at this level. Clean leather sandals, loafers, boots or a minimal leather sneaker all pass without any comment.
Is Melbourne stricter about Smart Casual than Sydney or Brisbane?
Slightly, and the weather is part of the reason. Melbourne dining rooms run a sharper version of the code and the city's weather turns fast enough that a light jacket earns its place more often than it does further north. Sydney and Brisbane lean more outdoor and more relaxed for most of the year.
